Night, Starry
Meredith Morckel
Flip van Gogh’s Starry Night over
and there’s a face in the sky.
It’s Muppet-y and only
has one eye.
The bridge of its nose
is the beginning of a swirl.
And the longer I look I realize
it’s a scowling girl.
Her eye that fell out
has become the moon.
Her horizontal hair, blue and yellow,
is in ruins.
Her frown dips halfway
across the painting.
The stars are like acne scars
or maybe tears, dripping.
What happened to you,
sky-girl, all air and light?
Why are you so unhappy
on this starry night?
Did the black spire in the foreground
give you a fright?
Or are you angry that this painting
captured you, trapped you in night?
✨What’s Mere’s Messy Poems and Prayers?✨ MMPP is a Substack where I post the first (and very, very rough) drafts of poems and prayers (hence the “messy”). I publish every Monday (sometimes Tuesday). On the first Monday of the month, I post something FREE. It’s free for everyone who has subscribed (and free to whoever you forward it to). On the second, third, and fourth Monday the poem or prayer is behind a paywall. (Click HERE to become a paid member and gain access to the entire archive!) My 4 Es are my purposes in life. I’m called to Empower people, Entertain, Educate, and Encourage them. May each messy poem or prayer do at least one of those for you. In and with love, Mere ✨REMINDER✨ In 2026 I’m donating half of all the money I earn from annual and founding subscriptions to the Deportation Defense Response Team. The DDR team works in partnership with On Earth Peace to support the families of refugees who have been illegally detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Learn more about my commitment HERE. As of today, I’ve donated $110! Encourage your friends and family to purchase a subscription to Mere’s Messy Poems and Prayers to support both art and justice!
