Sky Treasures
Sun & Moon have a chat
Sky Treasures
Meredith Morckel
Once upon a time,
the sun said to the moon,
“You should thank me.
Without my light,
their eyes wouldn’t see you.
Your beauty would go to waste
if not for my shine.”
The moon looked at herself,
with the light she didn’t own.
“The poets,” she said,
“would say my darkness
is as beautiful as your light.
My edges, craters, and cliffs
as beautiful as your flames.”
The sun scoffed,
rolled his eyes.
“I am the treasured.
I am a star,
upon me they wish
for their deepest dreams.
I am precious.
Without me their planet
would die.
Without you,
what would change?”
Moon shrugged.
“They can’t stare at you,” she replied.
“But millions of eyes stare at me.
You may light up a solar system
but I light up their imaginations.”
✨What’s Mere’s Messy Poems and Prayers?✨
MMPP is a Substack where I post the first (and very, very rough) drafts of poems and prayers (hence the “messy”). I publish every Monday (sometimes Tuesday). On the first Monday of the month, I post something FREE. It’s free for everyone who has subscribed (and free to whoever you forward it to). On the second, third, and fourth Monday the poem or prayer is behind a paywall. (Click HERE to become a paid member and gain access to the entire archive!)
My 4 Es are my purposes in life. I’m called to Empower people, Entertain, Educate, and Encourage. May each messy poem or prayer do at least one of those for you. In and with love,
Mere
✨REMINDER✨ In 2026 I’m donating half of all the money I earn from annual and founding subscriptions to the Deportation Defense Response Team. The DDR team works in partnership with On Earth Peace to support the families of refugees who have been illegally detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Learn more about my commitment HERE.
As of today, I’ve donated $82.50! Encourage your friends and family to purchase a subscription to Mere’s Messy Poems and Prayers to support both art and justice!

I loved hearing your “Sun and Moon Chat” poem at the Open Mic; the written images paint pictures, personality and perspective. 💕
Oh Mere, this is just beautiful. My moon-lit imagination could see these two creations talking.
